Digital Photography Tips and Tricks for the Intermediate Photographer
Once you have been taking photographs for a while, you will no longer be a beginner, but you still might be interested in digital photography tips and tricks to improve yourself. Your grasp of photography concepts will be significantly better than most people who own a digital camera. Perhaps you have even had a few paying gigs. Once you reach this level of expertise, there are some general practices to follow in order to continue your development as a photographer. The following are just a few:
New photography equipment is not necessarily the solution
When one wants to get to the “next level” as a photographer, there is always the temptation to invest in new pieces of equipment. A brand new camera is always alluring, but it is easy to get mesmerized by secondary items too: lenses, tripods, filters, even camera bags, and cases. Before making any of these purchases, take a hard look at whether the object of desire is a want or a need. Is it really impossible to continue without the new digital camera or accessory? Are you really missing out on certain shots due to lack of equipment?
Carefully maintain your camera and other gear
If you are able to invest only in the most important of items, you will want to make sure that they will last as long as possible. Be sure to appreciate the items you buy, as well as anything you might receive as a gift. Spend just a little bit of effort keeping your current equipment in optimal condition. Frequently clean your gear and keep it dry. And of course, avoid dropping it (duh!). Easier said than done, I know, but this will result in significant benefits in the long run.
Developing as a photographer through failure
To continue progressing in your journey to become a digital photography expert, you will need to be bold and yet not get discouraged if things do not turn out as expected. Try taking shots in new locations, new lighting, new weather, etc. You might end up with some subpar photos, but this is the only way to learn what works and what doesn’t. Knowing concepts and theory is great, but it is much more valuable to put something into practice and learn exactly how it works best for you.
Stay humble and don’t forget the basics
Once you start having breakthroughs with new photography techniques, there will be a temptation to believe you have everything figured out. Maybe you have made some money and received great praise for your photos. Don’t let this go to your head! You want to continue learning, and you don’t want to stray too far from your foundation. Basics like the rule of thirds, perspective, and depth of field will always influence your digital photographs, so ignore them at your own peril.
