Hiking Glen Brittle, frozen Fairy Pools - #MyPictureDay entry

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Isle of Skye - scottish island on the north-west side of Brittish Islands, is one of the best photographic places which I have visited until now.

I think there are more than twenty great spots to visit on this island, but Fairy Pools in Glen Brittle (valley Brittle) is one of the top five for sure. The path is leading us by the mountain stream towards the biggest mountains in the island - Black Cuillin (Cuillin Hills). The water in the stream goes straight from melting ice and snow on the higher parts of the mountains - it is pure clear, has amazing colour, is icy cold and taste great! (dont try to drink during hight season - who knows what was added to the water in upper parts ;)) .

The stream itself is flowing fast, in many places creating small ponds with colorful rocks and stones on the bottom, in other places it falls down as a waterfalls. The place is great for all kind of shooting - from landscape, wide angle frames, to long exposures on the flowing water and zooming to the amazing tops of Cuillin Hills.

During the high season - from June to August - we can expect really big traffic ... in fact it could be more people than open spaces ;)... so If You are going to visit Skye - do it before June or in autumn time.

What is interesting - this amount of water in the stream I havent seen before - it is extreme low. Really low temperatures and not much rain drops caused the river to slow down, and thanks to this - it began to freeze - which is also not so common sight here.

Weather conditions were really challenging for shooting but I menaged to took few shots which I hope will be interesting for You.

All the pictures were made during my leading of photographic workshops, together with my brother, for a group of US students. So I really havent much time to set the tripod, try long exposures or stay at place for longer time - all are from hand-held camera. Gear used: Canon 6D with Canon 24-105mm lens and Polarizing filter.

Hope You enjoy this!

really nice photos ! Seems like it was cold there :)

Thanks! It was quite windy and moisty...but comparing to really cold weather we have now in Norway - it was mild for me ;). Thanks for comment!

Great technique, dude!

Great thanks!! :D

awesome hike... would be nice to capture it with more level of ice..

Believe me - this is already a lot of ice there - normally it is only some frost, Isle of Skye has unique climate with very strong influence of warm ocean waters... Thanks for comment!
