[Photography series#5] Natural Phenomenom: Snow Chimneys
Mount Erebus is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica (after Mount Sidley) and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It is the sixth highest ultra mountain on an island.
The volcano has been active since c. 1.3 million years ago and is the site of the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory run by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
This Volcano Creates Snow Chimneys! Ice around volcanic openings are what makes this volanco so special!

This amazes me. With all the heat leaving the ground how do these "ice chimneys" not melt? It seems that the heat traveling through it constantly would slowly break it down.
Beautiful. Volcano Creates Snow Chimneys,,, Surprised
