A Drive through the Majestic Redwoods

We took a road trip around California this summer. One of the best stops was a drive through Humboldt Redwood State Reserve, (part of that reserve is the more famous "Avenue of the Giants"). This picture was taken on the drive towards our campsite.

At the visitor Center, they have the remnants of a 1,000 year old tree. The growth rings are very small, but they have mapped out to the year, when this tree was born, the when it fell down.

Most interesting is the perspective of history you get, by putting key human dates next to the rings. This tree was just standing by, doing its own thing, when all of this was happening.

So we finally make it to our campsite! There are signs everywhere not to leave out your food due to the bears who would stop by and investigate. There is plenty of campsite plot to have a comfortable night between the trees.

For an evening hike, we went out and tried to take pictures in panorama mode. Its hard to relay in a picture, even in panorama mode, how majestic the trees are. You really have to experience it in person.

My favourite shot of all: trying to get a glimpse of the sky between the tree canopies.
