I know this is quite old post, but it still shows up from time to time. Those parameters mentioned in this article are no longer valid (after 0.14.0 version).

Now they'd be something like this:
AMD:
ethminer.exe --farm-recheck 200 -G --pool stratum1+tcp://ADDRESS.WORKER@pirl.minerpool.net:8004
NVIDIA:
ethminer.exe --farm-recheck 200 -U --pool stratum1+tcp://ADDRESS.WORKER@pirl.minerpool.net:8004
