ANYTHING MORE IS GRAVY (An Original Poem)

in #poetry8 years ago (edited)

It grew me right up
this blessing, this curse
this thing that compelled me
to become a reluctant deity
contriving a world and all that
gives it breath

once the ambrosia of creation
brushes against your lips
you rely on its complexity
to complete you

this monkey that clings
so desperately to my back
screeching its words of wisdom
gleaned from lifetimes
of living in this harsh world

to have nothing more than that,
would be enough
a stone cold faith in these words
and that they have somehow changed me,
grew me right up
anything more is gravy.

nice @ericvancewalton, I really enjoy your perspective especially on creativity

This is a prelude poem. The calm before the storm. I can sense it, Eric. The wheels are turning.

My wheels are absolutely turning, my friend. : ) So many ideas are swirling about the second novel. If I only had two months to devote to it! Soon.

Im loving the imagery in the first and the stanza... but then this

this monkey that clings
so desperately to my back
screeching its words of wisdom
gleaned from lifetimes
of living in this harsh world

Makes it even better!

I appreciate your kind words! It feels like a monkey sometimes when you're doing something other than writing but the words want so badly to be born that they force themselves out of your imagination. It's a blessing mostly though.

I fully understand what you mean Eric. Sometimes it requires being the monkey though, if you know what I mean =)

Lol, I agree...sometimes we need that screeching monkey to wake us up!

awesome poem.
