Fear of Revealing the Self (original)
Cloaked in a comfortable mask,
Afraid of being revealed.
The partygoers enjoy their evening,
Of dance, laughter, intrigue and mystery.
With only the faintest fear of rejection,
And all of the pain that it brings,
Lingering in the air,
Where no one can see,
But everyone can feel.
The good people who are afraid,
Have learned through the years,
How to talk and behave.
But one thing they have not learned,
Is how to conquer their greatest fear.
The fear of revealing themselves.

Intriguing poem. I never know how much of a mask I put on in everyday interactions. How much of myself is revealed in my words and how much of myself never leaves that jumble of thoughts in my head?
Thanks for your comment, @therovingreader. Yes, I think we all wear masks from time to time and sometimes it can be hard to differentiate between a mask that we are used to wearing and the essence of who we really are.
