Governments have no legitimate political authority

in #politics5 years ago

Just like in the story "The Emperor's New Clothes", where the truth was so obvious that all it took was one kid pointing out that the emperor wasn't actually wearing clothes for people to admit that reality, it's glaringly obvious that governments don't truly have any political authority.

For one, the notion of political authority implies complete obedience, even in a democracy. If something is the law, no matter what that law is, it is to be obeyed. Even if you object to a law on moral grounds, you would still be prosecuted or face some sort of punishment should you decide to break it. This is why juries are instructed to deliberate on whether there is enough evidence to suggest that the accused broke the law, not whether he or she should be punished for breaking that specific law.

In reality, not every law is perfect, so there is no reason to believe that all laws should be obeyed without question. Laws are simply words written by flawed humans, and as such, they are not above the judgement of the individual. In other words, everyone has the right to decide for him or herself whether certain laws are just or unjust and act accordingly. This doesn't mean everyone will come to the correct conclusion as to what is right or wrong, but the law does not offer any more of a guarantee or a guide to what is right either.

Some are now probably asking "But what is the alternative? There have to be some laws!"

What we need are common sense rules such as "don't attack or steal". And the good news is most people already agree on these rules, because we understand it is wrong to commit those acts.

A small group of people deciding their own rules and imposing them on us by way of "legislation" and "government" is a terrible and destructive idea for trying to create organization and peace.

If you want a deeper understanding as to why the notion of politics and government are the very opposite of human progress, I suggest reading "The Most Dangerous Superstition" by Larken Rose as a start. Here are a few more resources as well:
