I can understand why Trump would walk into Beijing with a feeling of superiority that because he's president of America, a place of strong power. With this summit , he'll probably know the changes that have happened since his last visit. The China of today is not the same country that it was in 2017 when President Xi had to stage an expensive banquet just to feel like an equal. There's no need for that anymore.

The past 8 years have brought many changes to China. While the United States spent the period entertaining itself with political drama and war, China spent the years working hard. There are now solar and wind farms taking over northern landscapes. Southern factories are automating and replacing human labor with machines so quickly. The capital poured billions into robotics development within a single year. Look how BYD is kicking Tesla's ass.

Chongqing is the best example of what happened during those 8 years. The 30 million strong city of tall mountains and bright lights was once seen as an industrial center. Today it is a tourist spot and the leading electric vehicle maker in the world.

I doubt they care as much and infact I believe that China will no longer wait for the US to make the first move. Exports from the United States are down, but trade with Southeast Asian countries and Europe have taken their place. When those tariffs were imposed earlier in the year, every country backed down but we saw China did not. It's obvious the balance of power has shifted.

That does not mean all problems are solved though. Chinese municipalities are struggling with too much debt and the domestic property market is in bad shape. Unemployment among their youth is close to 17 percent, so you can't say it's so great.

Xi Jinping really doesn't care like he did years ago about reaching any particular deal with Trump. Trump having to fly to Beijing after 8 years is more than enough of a victory for his administration.
