AI is pushing people out of Lake Tahoe
AI has been great as a tool for anyone that sees its use but when you try to look behind the scenes of that model answering your questions, it's not all pretty. Don't forget that data centers are the very engine for any AI model and billions of dollars are being invested in these data centers. It has become so bad, AI is driving out residents of Lake Tahoe. Thank God I don't live there, I would say it's unacceptable but with their situation, it's difficult to do something about it.
Late May next year, NV Energy will stop giving 75% of the power to Liberty Utilities, that'll affect the 49,000 people living on the California side of the lake. NV Energy has stated that it will be needing this power for data centres. So the people will just be neglected?
The big tech companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft have built large buildings in Northern Nevada and will use a huge amount of energy to power these buildings. By 2030, data centres will account for 35% of all power used across Nevada.
I'm also thinking about what will be happening in other parts of the world, like China, Europe and parts of Asia.
This is an unfair situation. They face a big problem, those who live in California and use the power grid of the State of Nevada. The California Public Utilities Commission has approved an 11.4% rate increase which was to start in March 2026. Power rates have gone up 77% since late 2022. There is now less than 1 year left to secure a new power source. Liberty Utilities is waiting for installation of a new $4.2 billion power line, Greenlink West, which is planned to be working May 2027. It looks like hope but what if that happens later than planned. Not enough power will be available to support the residents of Lake Tahoe in that kind of a mess.
The big companies are using the power that is needed for residents.
It was stated by Tahoe Spark's Danielle Hughes - "This loss of resources is affecting the quality of life of the residents.
Many employees who worked for local businesses in Kings Beach have moved because of the high cost of living. The residents need to fight the richest companies in order to get their basic needs, what a pity.
Do you think that residential customers should have a higher priority for access to power than data centres?
- Asking the question sounds awkward for me because the answer is obvious, no they shouldn't but maybe you've got another opinion.

🎉 Congratulations!
