Geoffrey Hinton is called the Godfather of AI. Recently, he received a Nobel Prize for his significant contribution in studying artificial neural networks. Generally speaking, winning a Nobel Prize is always considered a reason for celebration.

But instead of just celebrating, Hinton gave the speech where he presented his warning. He claimed that the technology he helped create can perfectly replicate human intuition. This means that we will soon have intelligent assistants, which will make businesses extremely efficient and because of that, it'll greatly benefit us. Right after talking about those positive things, Hinton delivered bad news because there were also plenty of short term risks associated with the new AI.

We do not have to think too much about the risks associated with the future since the new AI is already transforming our life in an extremely negative way. It is able to deliver biased content, making people click links because someone needs to stay in the business. It is actively being used by authoritarian states to spy on their citizens and by cybercriminals to conduct phishing campaigns. As for the immediate future, Hinton said that AI may lead to designing lethal viruses and autonomous weapon that would make a decision about who to kill by itself. In his opinion, governments worldwide should start solving the problem immediately.

There was also a discussion of the most concerning issues associated with AI, the possibility to build digital beings that are smarter than people are. This situation looks really scary because we have no idea how to deal with these beings if they get so far ahead of us. Many firms creating this kind of technology act like short sighted corporations and are interested only in making profit. Under these circumstances, the safety of humanity will never become the number one priority for them. Urgent research is needed to prevent this problem from happening.
