Someone said 10,000 walks a day. It's not scientific at all.

There was a recommendation to walk 10,000 steps each day but it does not have scientific backing, it started as a marketing gimmick in the 1960s when a Japanese company made a product that counted steps. They selected this particular figure because it sounded appealing and later doctors and mobile exercise apps began to incorporate the 10,000 step guideline into their programs, leading most people to see it as an absolute value.

You see how false information and ideology spreads. New research shows a different answer.

In 2026, researchers analyzed 18 different studies that focused on weight loss in non athletic over weight adults who were attempting to become more active. The aim was to determine how many steps they took and how that was related to their weight loss. In this study, the amount of steps taken did not correlate with weight loss, because those who successfully achieved weight loss walked an average of 8,500 steps per day. This was enough to achieve permanent weight loss and to prevent the regained weight.

The focus of most studies is to establish how many pounds were lost, but this study also evaluated how much each participant maintained that level of fitness in subsequent years after successfully losing weight. The same people who had walked about 8,500 steps per day showed no weight regain, those who walked fewer than 8,500 steps daily tended to regain the weight they lost.

Maintaining an appropriate weight is important, but many experience shortterm weight loss, so sustaining weight loss is the most challenging aspect of weight loss. For the duration of the study, the people who did not increase their physical activity level maintained their weight. As evidenced by this study, the relationship between physical activity and weight loss was significant.

One other important aspect of this topic, it is easier to achieve an average of 8,500 steps daily compared to 10,000. No membership to a gym is necessary, only an increase in walking can help you achieve this goal. I personally form a habit of walking and thinking and I think a lot so I walk a lot.
