3I/Atlas in 2026

3I/Atlas is an interstellar object that right now has cometary activity, but when it leaves it will no longer be a comet, that is, it will not periodically pass by the sun again and have that cometary activity, it is an interstellar object that has approached the sun and has developed cometary activity.

And on March 16, it will have its closest approach to Jupiter, it is currently moving away from the Earth, it had its closest approach to the Earth on December 19, the minimum distance Jupiter will be much less because the Earth was 270 million kilometers away, but from Jupiter it will be about 53,600,000 km, there was a controversy about whether the radius of Jupiter's Hill sphere, which radius is up to 53,500,000 km and in the end it will be 100,000 km further, these are one of those things that Avi Loeb brought up, but I don't make much sense of it.

The speculation was that entering within the Hill radius, the Hill radius is how far an object could go to be in orbit with Jupiter, that is, the last moon or rock that orbited Jupiter would be about 53,500,000 km, from there the solar gravity would end up winning and deorbit that object and it would not stay there, according to Avi Loeb, 3I/Atlas was heading right in that direction to speculatively sow with devices technological or with seeds of life, the point is that it does not pass through that radius and if I really wanted to aim to do that mission, why are you going to go over the edge, go 5 million or 500,000 km from Jupiter, to go close, don't go far, it doesn't make sense.

But even so it wouldn't be necessary, because 3I/Atlas has cometary activity and, like comets, it is releasing dust, rocks, etc., which it loses due to having been heated by passing close to the sun. When on Earth it crosses a trail of remains of that type, of a comet, it is what we see as a meteor shower, some of which are quite large and can produce very bright meteors and some can be enormous because, for example, it is believed that the Tunguska event in Siberia was caused by a fragment of a comet that broke up.

The trail from 3I/Atlas is not going to cross the earth, because 3I/Atlas approached only 203 million kilometers from the sun and the Earth is 150 million kilometers from the sun, so the Earth will never cross the trail that 3I/Atlas is leaving, Mars can, Mars can cross that trail and Jupiter too, these are interesting things that happen when an object like this passes through our cosmic neighborhood. 3I/Atlas.
