An ancient technology is heading to the stratosphere

Souce

A technology that many considered obsolete has just returned to the center of global innovation, airships, but now there is a completely different version, autonomous, powered by solar energy and capable of remaining in the stratosphere for long periods. Responsible for this is the American startup Sceye announced that its new high-altitude airship successfully concluded a 12-day mission in the air, flying above 15,000 m altitude.

For comparison, this is much higher than the cruising altitude of many commercial aircraft, during the test, the aircraft traveled about 10,000 km leaving New Mexico and arriving near the coast of Brazil, but the most important thing was not the distance, it was the permanence, because this type of platform was not created to travel fast, it was created to stay.

The SE2 model is about 82 m long and uses solar panels on the top to generate energy during the day, that energy recharges advanced sulfur batteries that keep the system running during the night, with this, the airship manages to operate continuously for into the future, possibly for months or even years and that opens up enormous possibilities.

According to the company, the main objective is to transform the stratosphere into a new layer of infrastructure, this means creating platforms capable of providing high-speed internet, environmental monitoring and emergency support in regions where towers, satellites or traditional networks fail.

Imagine areas affected by hurricanes, floods, earthquakes or large-scale fires, while the ground infrastructure collapses, a system like this could remain over the region offering immediate communication; It could also monitor forest fires, deforestation, climate changes and large-scale movements with constant vision from above.

Another impressive detail is the precision, during part of the tests, the airship managed to maintain a practically fixed position in the sky with a margin of just about 1 km, that makes it something between a satellite and an aerial communication tower and there is a strategic movement behind this, the company is already preparing commercial tests in Japan in collaboration with Softbank, showing that this idea is leaving the laboratory and entering the real market.
