Comet C/2025 R3 PanSTARRSf

Images of the comet with the exact name C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS were captured, because the PanSTARRS network is the one that discovered this comet, the photo is taken over the western horizon and the bright things that you see there are the molecular clouds of the Orion constellation, of course, it is done at a great distance with special lenses and also with art, because astrophotography has its artistic touch, you have to have talent and sensitivity to get such incredibly beautiful images.

This photo was taken on May 8 and the capture was near the Fassi chapel, which is a small rural settlement in the province of Santa Fe in Argentina, the star you see on the left below is the star Rigel, higher up is the Orion nebula M24 and the flame nebula.

You have to have some knowledge of astronomy to know what you want to photograph, but you also have to have artistic sensitivity. This C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS is one of the large ones, it is estimated that its nucleus is between 5 to 15 km in diameter, why such a difference, because every time we find a comet, we normally see it when it already has a coma, a cloud of gas and dust around it, as happened with 3I/Atlas and we do not really see its nucleus, we can estimate it, but the estimate is that it is one of the large ones, 5 to 15 km in diameter, by the way, it would be a similar size to the one estimated from 3I/Atlas, which spoke of 5 km, initially 20, but the average estimate is 5 km.

If it hits the Earth, this comet measuring between 5 and 15 km would cause an extinction a little less or similar to that which put an end to the era of the dinosaurs, it would be a global catastrophe, but this comet passed far away, its closest approach to the Earth was on April 26, 2026, a month ago to be exact, it passed 73.2 million kilometers from the Earth.

This will be one of the last photos there will be of it, because we will never see it again, it will never return, before April it was calculated that the Comet had a periodicity of 170,000 years. That is to say, the last time it came near here was when the first Homo sapiens, our species, began to timidly leave Africa, it was not the official departure, it is believed that there were departures at that time. The official departure marks it more like 100,000 years ago, but in April its passage near the sun has modified its orbit, in such a way that the comet has received a definitive push that will make it leave the solar system.

It will transform into an interstar object like 3I/Atlas and will travel through the galaxy for billions of years, there it will go on a journey to eternity. and it will therefore take the chemical composition of the elements of our solar system.
