On January 7, in the afternoon, evening, United States time, NASA announced that it was suspending the spacewalk planned for the next day, citing a medical concern for a crew member. At that time there was no mention of premature return yet, only the cancellation of the spacewalk. The next day, January 8, around 6:46 pm Eastern Time, NASA formally announced its decision to return the Crew-11 mission to Earth earlier than planned.
This was made public in a statement on the International Space Station blog and in a live press conference from NASA headquarters in Washington led by administrator Jared Isaacman, which confirmed that it is due to a controlled medical evacuation for a serious but stable problem that cannot be fully diagnosed or treated in orbit and that the return will occur in the coming days.
Now we know that the astronauts, all of the Crew-11 mission, will board their ship on January 14 and land on the Pacific coast off California on January 15, thus shortening their mission by four to five weeks. In addition, NASA did not report who the affected astronaut was, nor what the ailment of the affected astronaut was. It does so under federal laws such as the Privacy Act of 1974, which protects personal information in government agencies and is also covered by health insurance liability principles that regulate the privacy of medical data of United States citizens.
This legally justified silence has triggered speculation about what is happening, to begin with, why evacuate the four, all of them, the entire mission? Perhaps it is some contagious pathogen that is affecting everyone or, even if it affects one it may affect all of them, the evacuation of the four astronauts who are Zena Cardman, Mike Fencke from the United States, these two, Kimiya Yui from Japan and Oleg Platonov from Russia, is due to how spaceships are designed.
What I am going to tell you may sound strange, but it is true, the SpaceX manned dragon capsule and in general all the capsules, including the Russian ones, are configured with personalized seats molded to the size of the body of each crew member, in order to absorb the impacts on re-entry and also the G forces that occur at launch, literally what they do is submerge the astronaut in a foam mold to get a seat that fits perfectly with their body, therefore, getting on a spaceship is not It is like getting on a plane where you can choose any seat, due to the G forces that the human body is subjected to during launch and re-entry and a seat that does not adapt well to your body can cause injuries.
Changing seats or sending an extra empty ship or sending the ship with a single astronaut and then sending another for the rest would mean months of preparation and a huge expense as well, which is why it is much more profitable and practical to send the entire crew back, in addition, they only had about four to five weeks of tasks left.
An important question is whether we should worry that this is an evacuation due to an infection problem due to a virus or mutant bacteria, well no, because if that were the case they would have also evacuated the other three astronauts from the station, specifically, an American and two Russians who are going to stay there and, of course, they would have suspended the launch of a new crew, Crew-11, which will be in February.
