For the first time they achieve quantum teleportation of information

For quite some time now, teleportation has been one of the biggest dreams, at least in science fiction, the idea of instantly disappearing from one place and reappearing in another seemed something reserved for the movies, but science has already achieved something that at first glance seems impossible, because researchers from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands managed to execute a real form of teleportation through a functional quantum network, but there is an important detail, no one was transported.

In reality, what passed through the network was not matter, but information. To understand why this discovery is attracting attention, we need to abandon the logic of movies and immerse ourselves in the strange world of quantum mechanics. In the experiment, the scientists used processors based on diamonds and cooled to temperatures close to -270º, within that network there were three points called Alice, Bob and Charlie, the objective was to make quantum information disappear in one place and reappear in another without physically resorting to the path between them.

The secret lies in a phenomenon known as quantum entanglement. When particles become entangled, they share a common quantum state, even if they are separated by great distances. It was precisely this phenomenon that Albert Einstein described as a ghostly action at a distance. In the experiment, Bob acted as an intermediary, creating a quantum connection between Alice and Charlie. When the information was processed in Charlie, its original state ceased to exist in that place and emerged in Alice.

It is important to note that nothing physical traveled between the points, what was transferred was only the quantum state of the information, but then the inevitable question arises, if we can already teleport information, why can't we teleport human beings? The answer lies in physics itself, there is a rule called the non-cloning theorem that states that it is impossible to perfectly copy a quantum state without destroying the original, in other words, to teleport a person it would be necessary to completely disassemble each atom of their body to reconstruct it in another place and there we find a monumental problem, the human body contains approximately seven octillion atoms, recording the position, energy and quantum state of each of them would generate such an absurd amount of data that it exceeds any computational capacity currently imaginable.

But there is an even deeper dilemma. Even if this technology were possible, who would appear on the other side? Would it really be you or just a perfect copy with all your memories believing you were the original person? This question remains one of the biggest debates among physicists, neuroscientists and philosophers, despite that, researchers are extremely enthusiastic, the goal was never to create a human teleportation machine, the real purpose is to build the future quantum internet, a network where information can be transmitted with security levels that are practically impossible to violate.

In addition, this technology will be able to connect quantum computers distributed throughout the planet, creating processing systems much more powerful than anything existing today. In the end, science fiction imagined machines capable of moving bodies through space, reality ended up following a different path, freeing information from traditional physical limitations and perhaps this is just the first stage of a technological evolution that we are still beginning to understand, for example, a curvature engine to travel through space.
