NASA resumes supersonic flights.

For decades, the sound of speed was also the sound of limits. When the Concorde crossed the sky at more than twice the speed of sound, windows rattled and the planet heard thunder coming from above. It was the sonic boom, the price paid for speed, and it was precisely that sound that ended the golden age of civil supersonic flight.

But now, almost 70 years later, NASA has decided to rewrite this story, this time in silence, or almost. The experimental X-59 QueSST aircraft, developed in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, made its first official flight, taking off from the legendary Skunk Works base in California, the same birthplace of secret projects such as the SR-71 Blackbird and the F-117 Night Hawk.

The X59 QueSST is a wing-shaped scientific experiment. Its elongated nose, measuring almost 11 meters, and slender fuselage were designed to redirect airflow and disperse the shock wave that generates sonic booms. Instead of a sonic explosion of more than 130 decibels, the sound heard on the ground should be equivalent to the closing of a car door at around 75 decibels.

The maiden flight was only the first step, a verification of stability, control, and safety. In upcoming tests, NASA plans to take it beyond the sound barrier and then fly over entire units to measure how people react to the new type of sonic boom. If public acceptance is positive, it will be possible to revise international laws that have for decades prohibited supersonic flights in inhabited areas.

It is the first step toward reviving the idea of a more efficient, sustainable, and this time socially acceptable civil supersonic aircraft.
