The “dream chaser” spaceship

On April 14, Sierra Space sent us this statement saying that it had successfully completed this ship, which is a space plane, a critical launch acoustics test. The test was performed at NASA's space station processing facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The space plane was positioned with the wings folded, just as it would be inside the launch rocket and the acoustic test, it may sound trivial, but it is something fundamental because during a launch the noise is so thunderous that it can cause extreme vibrations and damage to the ship, so what they did was simulate what you see in black on the sides. They are speakers, 90 speakers with colossal power.

The complete set generates an acoustic environment that would be in the order of between 100 to 1000 times, if you put it to the maximum, 1000 times more intense in power than the typical sound of a rock concert, it is the dream of a Scandinavian heavy metal group, it is something brutal. It could literally kill you, if you were in the middle of it next to the ship and at maximum power those speakers would kill you from the sound.

When the ship is ready, it would be a ship to reach low Earth orbit, it would not be to go to the moon, it plans to launch, if everything goes well, a test mission at the end of this year, between October and December, it would be a demonstration flight, it would be launched by a Vulcan Centauro rocket, and it would have a landing because the advantage of this ship is that it lands like an airplane, it would have a landing at the Vandenberg space force in California. The advantage of landing like an airplane, as you can imagine, is that it does not waste fuel when it comes to stopping the fall like a Starship does.

The StarShip lands vertically, but has to expend fuel to do that braking and landing. A ship that lands, that glides like an airplane, does not use fuel. It's an advantage. Afterwards it will be used as a cargo ship, but the company also wants to develop it as a human transport ship for the international space station and future stations that are built, whether for scientific research, tourism or military.

This company is also developing inflatable modules for space stations, in fact, it has an agreement with Blue Origin, which is the space company of Jes Bezos, that of Amazon, Sierra Space and Blue Origin were partners in a space station project called “Space Reef”, Sierra Space provided the basics, the essentials, the machine, which is the ship to carry loads and personnel to that space station and the space station modules and Blue Origin, since I was leading the financial project, basically, one provided the money and another provided the equipment, but I don't know what exactly happened in 2023 and Blue Origin has stumbled a bit with Sierra Space and the project has been somewhat stopped.

It is very similar to a ship that the French had developed in the 80s, there was a time when the European Space Agency wanted to be a space agency and not a helpful agency at the service of the United States, I say this because if you have seen the Artemis 3 mission, the European Space Agency collaborated with equipment and with material and with things, and also other space agencies, but its name did not appear anywhere in the press releases, nor the headlines, nor anything, these are things of collaboration international, but in the 80s there was an intention for the European Space Agency to have a spacecraft that could take astronauts to low Earth orbit and therefore astronauts to the international space station, but it is not very well known why the project that would have meant a ship very similar to this one, a space plane that would land like an airplane, was stopped.

In exchange, they decided to pay Russia and the United States for the flights of the European astronauts who had to go to the international space station. The ESA is a space agency, but it does not have spacecraft, it currently does not have any spacecraft, something that it wants to change in the coming years, let's see if it's true, let's see if they get their act together, wake up and decide to be a little more independent.
