The Supernova that has been exploding for decades

Souce

On January 6, NASA published this sequence of images, they are the bright remains of the Kepler supernova with a radius of about 7 to 10 light years, it is 17,000 light years away from Earth, so it is not a problem for us, it is a problem if we were about 160 light years away from the explosion, which is more or less the dangerous zone.

And 60 light years is considered the death zone and it also depends a little on the power of the supernova, because not all of them are equally powerful. If the Earth received the explosion of a supernova that was 60 light years away, obviously the radiation would begin to reach 60 years, it would suffer a mass extinction and the closer a planet with life was, the worse.

This radius, the radius of what we are looking at, 10 light years, a planet, would have suffered total mass extinction. Not only is it within the death zone, but it would be within an area where it would lose a large part of its atmosphere, its oceans would vaporize and life would be reduced to nothing, because even if there were beings that took refuge underground, muon radiation could penetrate up to hundreds of meters under solid rock, causing cancer and other biological damage.

Muons are cosmic radiation and perhaps we have already talked about them because they are used to, for example, scan entire mountains or the pyramids of Egypt, the discovery of chambers and tunnels that were not known to exist within the pyramids of Giza, the great pyramid of Giza, was thanks to using this type of muons, these cosmic particles, but of course, in the quantity that we receive them here on Earth, they do not pose a serious problem, of course, this is a supernova explosion.

And if someone had still survived cancer and radiation, perhaps in ultra-deep shelters, 1000 meters deep or more, and came out after 25 years, the landscape they were going to see would be something horrible, and these images are showing us, they would literally see the wave of material ejected by the supernova explosion, they would see a bright flaming sky burning in material that would arrive in bursts.

In 10 light years of radius from that supernova explosion, there is no hope for any planet that would have life, luckily we have nothing nearby that can do that, in 10 light years of radius from the solar system there are a dozen star systems with about twenty as many stars, some systems are double systems, but they are red dwarfs or in Alpha Centauri, they are stars like the sun, they are quite stable stars, there is no problem, in that sense and we would not have any problems in the next millions of years.

That does not mean that at some point in the future the solar system will not pass near one of these monsters, in fact, in the past we have already had it is believed that one of the great mass extinctions was due to the explosion of a supernova, because the sun, our solar system is in motion circling the galactic nucleus, what it takes for the Sun to make a complete revolution around the galaxy is about 225 million years and on that journey it passes through quiet areas like this and through very complicated areas and can pass close to a star giant that was about to explode.
