Physical engineers and designers have attempted to answer a simple and perplexing question. Is it possible to create structures that simply refuse to sink even when damaged?

Now this is possible because researchers at the University of Rochester claim to have taken a real step in that direction; the team demonstrated that ordinary aluminum tubes can be transformed into structures that float indefinitely, even full of holes, even submerged for long periods, even in turbulent water.

The secret is not in engines or pressurized tanks, it is in the surface, the scientists used a laser texturing process on the internal part of the metal, creating millions of microscopic and nanoscopic cavities. These structures make aluminum superhydrophobic, meaning water simply cannot adhere to the surface of the metal.

When the treated tube enters the water, something curious happens, the inside traps a stable air bubble and that bubble refuses to come out even if the tube is pushed down, as long as there is air trapped inside, the water does not occupy the space, and as long as the water does not occupy the space, the tube continues to float, in tests, the tubes remained floating for weeks in aggressive environments. They were punctured, deformed, subjected to rough water and continued to float.

This means that multiple tubes can be connected to form larger platforms, ocean ball bases, dock structures, floating platform foundations, or even ship hulls that are much more resistant to catastrophic failure.
