Aptera produces its first solar-powered electric vehicle

San Diego-based Aptera announced the start of production of its first solar-powered electric vehicle. The model has just rolled off the assembly line in California, marking the transition from handcrafted prototypes to a structured industrial process. The new production line was designed with 14 assembly stations, enabling repeatable construction, quality control, and preparation for large-scale manufacturing.

These first vehicles will not be sold immediately.

They are part of a validation line used to test the car under extreme conditions before delivery to customers. The tests include thermal evaluations, braking tests, and even destructive tests, which are necessary steps for regulatory certification and approval by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

What really stands out about this project is the concept of the vehicle.

The car has solar panels integrated into the bodywork, capable of generating energy directly from the sun. According to the company, in ideal lighting conditions, the panels can add up to 38 km of range per day without the need for recharging from the mains, meaning that for many urban journeys, the vehicle could operate with virtually no need for recharging, even when additional energy is required.

The performance remains impressive, with up to 643 km of range, fast charging in less than an hour, and a future version already planned that will be capable of exceeding 1,600 km of total range. Although it may appear to be an experimental project, the demand already exists. Aptera claims to have received nearly 50,000 reservations representing a potential of more than $2 billion in sales. And while new technologies are beginning to transform transportation, others are completely changing the way cities monitor safety and emergencies.
