The new chip race.
If you think that the basis of artificial intelligence depends solely on software, there is an invisible detail that is becoming the true limit of this evolution, the chips. And now a gigantic move has just occurred behind the scenes of this race.
Intel decided to join the ambitious Terrafem project led by Elon Musk and an initiative valued at around $20 billion. The goal is not just to increase production, it is to completely redefine scale with a plan to build a mega structure in Texas capable of producing the equivalent of 1 TW per year in computing power dedicated to artificial intelligence.
A number that alone already exceeds the current industry standard. This completely changes the reading of what is happening, because it is not just another chip factory. It is an attempt to anticipate a future where processing demand will explode and perhaps no current supplier will be able to keep up.
The project brings together companies that until recently operated independently, Tesla, SpaceX and xAI are now part of the same ecosystem and with the entry of Intel it gains something essential, real manufacturing capacity at scale. The idea is to integrate different stages of production in one place, combining logic, memory and processing more efficiently, something that completely moves away from the traditional model of the semiconductor industry.
But there is an even more aggressive point, the pace, while companies like NVidia and AMD work with development cycles close to a year, but they want to reduce that time to about 9 months. an acceleration that can create a huge competitive advantage, only that increasing computing power at every global level brings with it a new problem that has accompanied these technologies from the beginning. How to feed all that?
