Radioactive batteries

For months of autonomy with radioactive energy

While new technologies try to make machines and humans more efficient, there is another challenge that continues to limit all of this, energy, because no matter how advanced a technology is, if it depends on constant recharges, it still has a limit, but now a different proposal emerges, a battery that does not need to be charged the way you know it.

A startup called Avalanch Energy just received a contract from DARPA to develop a new type of battery. A battery based on radioactive material, capable of powering a system the size of a laptop for months without needing to recharge, this type of technology is not completely new, it has already been used in space missions such as robots that explore Mars, but there has always been a problem, low efficiency.

While traditional batteries can store large amounts of energy, radioactive versions have always been far behind in that regard and this is exactly what this new project seeks to solve. The goal is to create a compact, resistant battery with a much higher energy density than previous versions, using a system called alphavoltaic cell.

In practice, these cells convert particles emitted by radioactive materials directly into electricity in a similar way to what a solar panel does with light, but here, instead of light, what generates energy are invisible particles released continuously; This completely changes the concept of portable energy, because instead of storing energy, the battery begins to generate energy constantly, however, there is an important detail.

This type of technology was designed for extreme environments: space, severe temperatures, intense radiation, places where conventional batteries simply do not work and that reveals the real goal behind this advancement. It is not just about improving everyday devices, it is about making viable systems that need to operate for long periods without human intervention, satellites, military systems, space exploration and even autonomous machines that must operate for months without stopping.

When energy is no longer a limit, these machines begin to evolve in another direction, not only in capacity, but in the way they interact with people.
