The Chinook is automated

Autonomy in the skies

While the public debate still revolves around self-driving cars, the US military has just quietly moved towards something much bigger, a CH47F military helicopter made its first fully automated landing, without human intervention during final approach and touch down.

We are talking about one of the most important aircraft in US military logistics, operating with real autonomy. The test used the system developed by Boeing, capable of assuming the most delicate phase of a flight, landing in complex, small and potentially hostile environments, it is precisely at that moment when errors cost lives.

Now imagine praying at night with low visibility on irregular terrain and low risk of attack, that is what this technology is preparing for, since January 2026, the system has already executed more than 150 automated approaches, maintaining a precision of up to 1.5 m, in reduced landing zones, that difference can separate a successful mission from a disaster.

The machine, for now does not replace the human pilot, reduces his mental overload, the military continues to define parameters such as the landing site, the descent profile and mission priority, however, during the critical maneuver, the software corrects the route, recalculates the trajectory and responds in real time to changes in the environment.

It is the logic of modern war, humans decide, machines refine.

The Chinook is not just any helicopter, its dual rotor system made it a centerpiece for heavy transport, evacuation, troops, resupply and humanitarian aid, it has operated for decades in deserts, mountains and extreme regions, now it is gaining a new brain, at the same time, the United States expands the fleet of the Block Chinook version with a $324,000,000 contract for six more units.

This version brings a reinforced structure, improved transmission and an increase in payload capacity of around 1800 kg, it also flies further and operates more efficiently, but aerial autonomy is only part of the story.
