One of the biggest challenges in fighting fires is not only putting out the flames, but understanding what is happening inside them. Environments with extreme heat, dense smoke and constant risk of collapse make the safe entry of equipment practically impossible in many scenarios, but a new technology is being developed precisely to change that.

EMPA researchers created a drone designed to operate directly inside fires, withstanding temperatures that would destroy any conventional equipment called Firedrone. This system was developed to resist temperatures of up to 200º, a huge leap compared to the approximately 40º that traditional drones endure and this was only possible thanks to an advance in the material that protects its components.

The drone is covered by a layer of airgel, an extremely light and porous material, capable of insulating heat efficiently, creating a thermal barrier around the entire structure. In addition, the system has an internal temperature control that constantly monitors the components and activates cooling mechanisms when necessary, allowing it to remain operational for several minutes, even in extreme environments. Equipped with cameras and thermal sensors, FireDrone transmits images in real time, allowing external equipment to accurately visualize the inside of a fire. This includes identifying hot spots, mapping internal structures and assessing risks before anyone has to enter the site.

Another important detail is that the drone was designed to operate in environments where GPS does not work, using internal navigation systems that allow precise maneuvers even in closed spaces and without visibility. This further expands its possibilities of use, from rescues in burning buildings to inspections in industries that remain dangerous for days after a fire. And while some technologies are created to protect lives in extreme situations, others are being developed to overcome limits that for decades seemed unattainable.
