The new generation of fighter jets

Prioritizing Vertical Takeoff

U.S. companies are developing a new generation of aircraft capable of operating without conventional airports by combining vertical takeoff and landing capabilities with artificial intelligence and propulsion technologies derived from military aviation. In modern conflict, runways are strategic targets; satellites can easily locate them, and long-range strikes can disable these structures within the opening hours of a war. To mitigate this vulnerability, Shields AI and GA Aerospace are developing a platform capable of operating from much smaller locations—such as remote islands, improvised sites, and even adapted naval vessels—thereby reducing reliance on large airbases.

The primary challenge lies in vertical flight. Unlike a helicopter, a jet must manage the immense forces generated by its engine while remaining virtually stationary in the air. To achieve this, the project employs a thrust-vectoring nozzle based on the legacy AVEN program, which was originally developed for testing on the F-16.

This system continuously directs the flow of engine gases, making minute adjustments at extremely high speeds to maintain stability during takeoff, hovering, and landing. All this capability is powered by the F110-GE-129 engine, one of the most renowned in U.S. military aviation. In addition to providing the thrust needed for flight, it generates enough power to run onboard radars, sensors, warfare systems, electronics, and other equipment.

The project also incorporates internal weapons bays, preserving key low-radar-signature characteristics. Yet, the software is arguably the most critical component. The "Hind" system, developed by Shield AI, enables the aircraft to execute parts of its missions with a high degree of autonomy, navigating even in environments where GPS signals are degraded or unavailable. Rather than relying solely on constant pilot commands, the artificial intelligence assists in decision-making and adapts the aircraft's behavior to environmental conditions.
