A new Guinness world record is broken
Nowadays QR codes are everywhere, in parks, restaurants, digital bills, but now imagine a QR code so small that you simply couldn't see it with the naked eye, not even with a common microscope, that was exactly what scientists from the Technical University of Vienna in Austria managed to create a microscopic QR code with just 1.98 microm² in area.
To get an idea of the scale, this is smaller than many bacteria and so tiny that it can only be observed using an electron microscope. With this achievement, the team officially secured a new world record in the Guinness, but the goal of this research goes far beyond breaking curious records, it is directly linked to one of the biggest technological challenges of the modern world, data storage.
The amount of information that humanity produces grows at an accelerated pace, data centers, scientific archives, historical data, cultural records, everything needs to be stored for decades or even centuries, for that, the researchers worked in collaboration with the German company, specialized in long-term storage technologies.
The microscopic QR code was etched onto an ultra-thin ceramic film using highly precise techniques. Each pixel of the code measures just 49 nanometers. This means that the elements of the code are about 10 times smaller than the wavelength of visible light. According to the researchers, this technology can open the way to new forms of extremely durable data files.
