For a long time, domestic robots were just a promise, ideas, prototypes, controlled demonstrations, but now a company is trying to take the next step, bringing a laboratory robot inside homes. Startup Sunday Robotics introduced the Mimo, a household robot designed to perform everyday tasks such as setting the table, loading the dishwasher and even folding clothes.

The most interesting thing is not in what it does, but in how it was conceived, unlike most humanoids that rely on legs, Memo uses a base with wheels and that is no coincidence, while bipedal robos need to constantly balance themselves so as not to fall, Memo was designed to seem stable by nature, even if all the power is cut, it simply does not fall.

This choice reveals something important, perhaps the future of domestic robotics is not in perfectly copying the human body without finding more efficient solutions for the real environment and that environment is much more complex than it seems, because it is one thing for a robot to work in a laboratory, it is quite another to deal with the unpredictable disorder of a real house, out of place objects, different surfaces and, above all, things without a defined shape such as clothes.

That's where the real difference comes in, Memo was trained with real human data, millions of interactions collected in hundreds of different homes, as if the robot learned directly from people's behavior, this process was not easy, the company had to distribute thousands of devices to capture that data, facing unexpected failures, collection errors and even physical problems during transportation, but all of this is part of a new development model, one where the robot does not learn only in simulations, but in the real world.

Now the company is preparing for the definitive test, bringing Memo to more than 3,000 homes, if it works there, then we will be facing something really new, and when the control of the machines reaches this level, what will be the next step.
