With the delicacy of a human.

With the delicacy of a human.

Harvesting a fruit—such as a strawberry—might seem like a simple task to a person, but for a robot, it is one of the most complex operations in agriculture; applying just a few grams of force beyond what is necessary can crush the fruit, shorten its shelf life, and turn a high-value product into waste. This need for delicacy previously hindered the full automation of fruit harvesting, but a new generation of agricultural robots promises to change that landscape.

While industrial robots have spent decades handling metals and rigid parts, fruit presents a completely different challenge: each piece has a unique shape, size, and position, and is often hidden among leaves and branches. To address this, engineers have created a platform equipped with up to 24 independent robotic arms capable of working simultaneously. Each arm features its own high-resolution cameras and optical sensors, analyzing every fruit individually before deciding whether it is ready for harvest.

If the system identifies areas showing signs of incomplete ripeness, it simply moves on to the next one. The machine's secret lies precisely in avoiding contact with the fruit's most sensitive parts. Instead of squeezing the strawberry, grippers hold only the small stem supporting it; an integrated blade makes a precise cut, allowing the fruit to be gently guided along cushioned chutes to the packaging area, thereby virtually eliminating harvest-related damage.

Even so, working in the field remains a huge challenge, as leaves often hide the fruit from the cameras' view, forcing the robots to use small jets of air to push aside the vegetation before inspection. Furthermore, uneven terrain slows down operating speeds, although the system can work through the night, when cooler temperatures help preserve the strawberries' quality.

The Agrobot E-series demonstrates that agricultural robotics has finally begun to master one of automation's greatest challenges: handling living organisms with a level of delicacy that, until recently, seemed to be an exclusively human capability.
