Quantum Teleportation Paving the Way for "Quantum Internet"
In a first, light has been teleported over the existing internet infrastructure using fiber optic cables.
Quantum teleportation between quantum computers happened in 2024 when light was passed 30 km between them. The Internet infrastructure was not used during this test, and the bigger feat of using existing internet infrastructure in place to teleport light was accomplished in 2025.
A photon was projected using existing internet infrastructure recently over a 400 Gb/second connection. There is a huge demand for fast and secure internet connection that will empower those who invest into quantum computing and are concerned with the security threats posed by quantum computers.
The "quantum internet" is a goal currently being engineered that will be faster and more safe than the existing internet. Communication that is secure between nodes and that can resist the threat of quantum computers to crack encryption is the goal, and it appears we are right on track.
Next up is real teleportation that I was promised in 1960s Star Trek!
