Barcelona Take Part in the Nelson Mandela Memorial Tournament

Barcelona - Barcelona will take part in the Mandela Centenary Cup this month. The Spanish champions will play South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The tournament was held as part of a memorial to Nelson Mandela, who should be 100 years old this year if. Mandela who was born on July 18, 1918, died on December 5, 2013 due to respiratory infections.

The match between Barcelona against Sundowns itself will be held on 16 May at the FNB Stadium. Los Cules will land in Johannesburg the day before the match.

This will be Barcelona's second visit to South Africa in its history. They used to beat Sundowns 2-1 in a friendly in Pretoria in 2007.

Barcelona is always impressed with Mandela, who is known as an anti-apartheid fighter. When Mandela died in 2013 ago, Barcelona also grieved by wearing a black ribbon against Cartagena.

"It is the popular Mandela who reveals that sport has the power to change the world, that it has the power to inspire, to unite people in a way that is difficult to do by other things," said Barcelona on its website.

"Sport speaks to young people in a language they understand, and sports can create hope in which there is only despair, this is stronger than the government in dismantling the walls of racism, sports laugh at all kinds of discrimination."
