Steemit and the underappreciated porn star
There exists no better a place on the internet (or the blockchain, for that matter) to start your own porn business than on Steemit. Not only does the name "Steemit" seem to be a subliminal message that screams "hot, crazy porn within", but the whole concept of distributed trust lends itself well to a less exploitation-rampant porn industry. Some readers may be rolling their eyes, some may be disgusted, but MOST are curious. After all, you're the one who clicked the link because the title had "porn" in it, right? I can't blame you; porn is a billion(s) of dollars industry in the US. The proof is in the proverbial pudding (insert money-shot). But where does all of the money go? Well put down your paper towel, sock, or random piece of dirty laundry and read on further while we delve into a superficial, yet succinct view of the burgeoning blockchain porn industry. Don't worry, much like enjoying a great free porn video, this won't take long and you will not have accomplished very much of anything when we're done.
So how do pornographers get paid when so many consumers do not pay? Well...perhaps there just may be a large enough fraction of paying consumers....but not likely. In my opinion, the economics don't work out. Surely.... SOME of the consumers pay, but is that enough to account for the billions mentioned earlier? I think not. Ask yourself: Have I EVER paid for porn? For this author: the answer is "only a couple of thousand dollars." JUST KIDDING....that would be ridiculous and embarrassing..... Not because people automatically correlate "a couple of thousand dollars" to an equivalently large amount of porn, but because only people who failed the internet pay for their porn (my apologies to the consumers that have paid for porn, or the people who have "accidentally" paid for porn; you are, as Darwin may put it, "destined for extinction"....and since you're not ACTUALLY having sex that may be twofold). Seriously though; How is all of this money made and how is it distributed? There is an enormous amount of porn out there...one would think that all of these porn stars are making great money!!!
NO....the big money is NOT made from selling to the porn consumer and the majority of the proceeds certainly don't go to the actors doing all of the work. Here is a video that, at least, partially explains the source of some of that revenue:
Is the problem mentioned a scary problem? Hell yes, but Cyber security aside, we can't discuss Steemit without discussing the blockchain and decentralized networks. As some readers may already know, decentralized, block chain technology removes the middle-man and any associated trust that must be given to him (or her) to complete a transaction between two parties. The "trusted" middle-man in the porn industry is the guy that reaps the majority of the rewards of other's work......the "Fluff" from the fluffer-nutter sandwich............(not the fluffers, though I am sure that they spread just as easily). These are the guys that hold all of the cards. If you have a GENERAL understanding of distributed technology, like me, you know that trust is established within and throughout the Steemit network. So what does this mean for a "would-be" (or a can-do) performer? Well, imagine that you want to get into the porn industry but don't know where to start. With the old system, you either have to put your feelers out, or you have to know someone already in the industry. The existing porn industry, for many, many reasons, is the perfect setup for exploitation. Take this scenario for example: You're looking to express your talent in the porn industry. So you start searching the greatest source of information ever created: the internet. You find an ad, reach out, and suddenly find yourself on the casting couch. Next thing you know you're getting stuffed like a thanksgiving turkey and when you're done, you get a couple of hundred bucks....or worse, a "good bye", an STD and your video displayed on a not-so-reputable porn site. Meanwhile your consumers are being exploited for their personal information. Middle man take all! GODDAMN UNTRUSTWORTHY MIDDLE MAN! GOD DAMN IT!Is this scenario likely? I dunno. Possible? Definitely. Probable? yes.
A better solution: post your performance on Steemit. If it sucks, you won't earn much and you're material is then, likely, fairly unforgettable; you won't really be in the spotlight. If it's GREAT you could be up-voted, earn some FAT cash and get the admiration of your consumers. This could be the free market at it's best; No middle-man, no lies, and no exploitation. Is it possible that the very early life of your post will be spent generating little-to-no income? Well, sure....at first. But if you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life! Besides, that caboose may pick up some steem! And then what!? Look out!
In closing: The role of the third party "trustee" is on its way to becoming obsolete. We'll never stop the jerkers from jerkin', the hustlers from hustlin' or the workers from workin'. All we can do is be happy and hope to get OUR piece of the creampie....not the one that someone else thinks we deserve. So let's get out there and give it our best. Trust in our network(s) and never again pay an untrustworthy party for doing nothing more than taking a cut. Cheers!
The video and post is interesting and I don't know why you got a downvote for it. It is a well known fact that many people that tried to get into the porn industry got burned really hard, either by getting financially exploited or get infected with a STD. Steemit has a great potential to directly connect content creators and consumers without any middle man or services in between. There is so much money lost in between the engaging parties.
I took the porn industry as an entertaining example. In reality, this new paradigm can apply to any employer-employee work relationship. If a boss is getting rich off of your back, are you being exploited? Maybe. The distributed ledger has the ability to tip the scales. The challenge is to first build the infrastructure to support this type of new relationship and then affect worker's minds (admittedly, the most difficult task).
