Weekly Story Writing Contest – Week 4 / A Strange Letter – That Was Never Sent

A letter suddenly came out of an old book.

The letter had turned yellow, as if it had been hidden for many years. A name was written on the envelope, but surprisingly, the person with that name had disappeared many years ago.
The letter was never sent.

I slowly opened the envelope…

And what I read changed everything in my life.
I didn’t move for a while. I just sat there, staring at the envelope like I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. Then my eyes settled on the name, and my heart began to beat faster.
Michael.

Seeing his name again after so many years felt strange. It wasn’t loud or dramatic, just a quiet feeling that settled deep inside me. Michael wasn’t just someone I used to know. He was part of my life in a way that is hard to explain. We grew up together and shared a lot of memories. We were more like best friends right from childhood. Being with him always felt natural and I didn't have to pretend or try too hard. We understood each other like it was meant to be that way.

After we were finished university, he started giving me space, like something was bothering him but he refused to talk about it. And one fateful day, he told me we needed to talk about something important. Nothing negative crossed my mind. So when he went ahead to say our relationship couldn’t work, that we should go our separate ways, I was shocked. There was no proper explanation, no real reason. He just left me very confused and hurt.

After that, he was no where to be found.

For years, I tried to reach him but to no avail. I kept asking myself what I did wrong, if I wasn’t good enough for him or if he fell out of love. I tried to move on, but a part of me always felt like something was missing, like there was something fishy about his disappearance
My hands felt shaky as I opened the letter. The paper inside was old, but the writing was clearly visible. The moment I saw the handwriting, my chest tightened.

It wasn’t Michael’s.
It belonged to my mother.
I paused for a second, then forced myself to keep reading.
“Michael,
We believe this is the best decision for everyone involved.”

That sentence alone made me uncomfortable. It sounded too serious, like something had already been decided without any space for discussion.
I continued reading slowly.
“You have already been compensated for your cooperation, and we expect you to keep to the agreement.”

I stopped for a moment, trying to understand what I had just read. The word “compensated” didn’t sit well with me. It felt cold, like this wasn’t about feelings at all.
I swallowed and kept going.

“You are not to contact our daughter again. No calls, no messages, no visits. It is important that you stay away.”
Tears started to form in my eyes as the meaning became clearer. This wasn’t just a breakup. This was something planned.

“We understand your situation, and we believe this arrangement will help you focus on your future. Staying with her would only make things harder for both of you.”
I shook my head slowly, tears falling now. All those years we spent together, all the love we shared, and this was how it was seen, as something that needed to be ended.

“You are not to tell her about this. It would only cause unnecessary pain.”
That line hurt deeply. They decided what I should or shouldn’t feel, without even giving me the chance to understand.

“You are still young. You will move on, and so will she.”
By the time I reached the end of the letter, my vision was blurred with tears. I lowered the paper slowly, my hands feeling weak.

Everything I had believed for years started to fall apart. Michael didn’t just wake up one day and stop loving me. He didn’t leave because he wanted to.
He was told to leave.
He was paid to stay away.
I remembered the last day I saw him. The way he couldn’t look at me properly. The way his voice sounded tight, like he was holding something back. At the time, I thought it meant he didn’t care anymore.

Now, it felt like he didn’t have a choice.
I held the letter close to my chest, my heart feeling heavy but also strangely calm. All those years, I blamed myself for something that was never really my fault.

They thought they were protecting me, but they didn’t give me the chance to decide for myself.
And somewhere out there, Michael might have been living his life with the same unanswered questions, the same silence.
The only difference now was that I finally knew the truth.
And even though it hurt, it reminded me that what we had was real.
