Weekly Story Writing Contest – Week 5 / The Day Everything Changed
The Day Everything Changed
That morning had been completely ordinary from other school days. I went to school laughed with my friends and didn’t give a single thought to the idea that my life was about to shift onto a different path. But the small decision or choice I made just to get home fast and safe change everything.
After the final bell rang for the dismissal of school my friend David and I started our normal walk home. That day at home it was so hot and sunny. But as we reached the crossroad near Mrs Gable's farm a sudden began. I suggested to my friend David that we should use the woods home since it will be a little bit more fast and safer.
David shook his head. No way he said My mom gave me strict orders never to go through the woods alone and during school days. She said it’s dangerous.
But I told him it will be faster to get home safe without the storm reaching us.
He still insisted on following the mom's instructions and gave me a nervous look turned and took the long road leaving me standing at the tree line.
I waited for only a moment. The woods were closer to my house. I told myself I would be fine. I stepped on the narrow path and began my journey alone.
At first everything was still. Too still. I looked up to the sky and noticed the gaps in the branches and noticed the sky. It was not normal. It had shifted to a troubled atmosphere almost black in places.
While walking a sudden thought came through my mind which was the same instructions my mother's friend said was that same instructions my mom gave earlier today. But I was already in the woods I whispered to my self.
The sky turned black.Lighting began flashing and a huge ran started. Since there was no shade in the woods I continue my journey on the rain not minding what will happen. While going, I heard a sound that startled me. It was the Wolves. Just grazing. My heart skipped and I continue going.
I started to run my feet in the mud. Then came a sharp crack above me. I looked up just as a big tree branch broke free and fell straight toward me.
I threw myself forward landing hard in the mud. The branch crashed down inches behind me. I lay there breathless covered in dirt and rain. I was safe. But my bag had been ripped from my shoulder. I turned to see a jagged piece of wood from the branch had pierced straight through the fabrics of my bag.
Inside my school bag were my school exercise book my mom bought for me. I rushed to save the bag but it wasn't possible. Rain had soaked all books. The rain water ran through the pages of the pages of the book while I opened my bag to check the books. Everything were useless and my books were .
I sat there in the mud, holding the wet pages tears mixing with rain. I had disobeyed. I had lost everything she gave me. I imagined her anger and her disappointment. I was too ashamed to move.
Then, through the storm, I heard her voice.
“Alex!”
I looked up. My mom stood at the backyard, her face completely showed she's worry. She saw me from afar sitting helpless in the mud and ran up to me not with anger but with fear. She went on her knees beside me not minding her own clothes are getting wet.
She hugged me so tight her arms were all over my small shaking body and she held me like she would never let go.
Forget about the books she said
You are here. That’s all that matters. No storm can ever take you away from me.
I sobbed into her shoulder.
You still have what you were taught, she whispered. That’s inside your heart. No rain can wash that away. Come. Let’s go home.
She didn’t beat me. She didn’t shout. She simply took me in mud and all and led me back to the house.
That particular moment everything changed. Unlike before I was to serve a fierce punishment but I was free and loved. That day and the moment change everything completely.
A day everything changed.
The end.
