Earth Ranger Marvelous Miguel

Yesterday, a few Earth Rangers joined me to do some clean-up at our UPB Tree Nursery located in Teken Quarter at Mile 4 Nkwen.
You can learn more about the UPB Tree Nursery here:

We started with cleaning-up the entire nursery space during which we removed all the weed from the nursed pears as well as around the entire UPB Tree Nursery.

The weed was used to fill a gully on the road that was located just around our nursery. This was to ensure the smooth passage of vehicles along this stretch of road.
After filling it with the weed, we covered the weed with a thick layer of lateritic soil and then watered it.

The weeding was followed by the hardening of the avocados that had already been nursed. This was done by Earth Rangers Marvelous and Frank-Kightley and myself (@mr-greens).

As you can see, the nursed avocados are doing exceptionally great in the upcycled plastic bottle nursery pot.

In March 2020, we will commence selling the nursed avocados and mangoes.

We are encouraging steemians who live in plastic bottle polluted communities to start collecting the plastic bottles and repurposing them into UPB Tree Nursery Pots. Plastic bottles are a huge opportunity for arboriculture and agriculture and if we exploit this opportunity, we will significatntly reduce plastic bottles pollution around the globe.

Great to see this good work you are doing. We always need more trees!

Where will you be planting these trees when they are ready?

I have sent a small donation from A Dollar A Day to help with the project.

Thanks very much for the donation and words of encouragement @pennsif. We will plant the trees in the farms of local farmers around the Bamenda Highlands Forest Area. Avocados have become very expensive and rare and this explains why we want to grow thousands of them so that we can make them available and cheap.

Sounds like a good plan.

What a wonderful and hopeful image of that young boy proudly holding his 2 avocado trees. :) Do the local people eat, or sell, avocadoes? Plans for a micro-biz to press avocado oil?

It's a nice, productive job. In time you will see the harvest.

I wonder if you can answer this question:

I've grown a number of avo trees, but I was told that none of them will give me fruit as they need to be grafted from fruit-bearing trees.

Is that true?

I am sure the person who told you that meant to say it will take a longer period of time before your Avos begin to fruit. Generally, when you nurse avo trees from seed without grafting them, it takes very long before they can start fruiting but if you graft them, it may take just about 3 years for your Avos to start fruiting.
The Avo trees will fruit even if you don't graft them but if you graft them from a fruit-bearing Avo, they will fruit in 3 years. Hope this helps.

Yes. Thank you

That is great work and just shows how much you care about our environment. In public schools here in our country these are often done as projects for students. Using recyclable material to plant different sorts of vegetables and flowering plants.

Congratulations @thegreens!
