How to Spot Crypto Pump and Dump Schemes
Assalamu Alaikum
One of the most dangerous speculative tactics used to siphon money from ordinary investors in the cryptocurrency market is the ‘Pump and Dump’ scheme. This is a coordinated fraud where the price of an anonymous or low-liquidity token—lacking any genuine on-chain utility—is artificially and rapidly inflated (the ‘pump’). Once ordinary people invest, driven by greed, the organizers simultaneously sell off all their tokens, causing the market to crash (the ‘dump’).
It is crucial to exercise caution if the price of a speculative token skyrockets by hundreds or even thousands of percent within just a few hours or days, without any visible positive news, partnerships, or project updates. Such artificial price hikes are often the result of on-chain manipulation by scammers. If you see a vertical spike on the price chart without any actual project utility or development, you should recognize it as a ‘pump’ trap.
Telegram groups, Discord, and X (Twitter) are the primary hubs for promoting pump-and-dump schemes. Organizers use massive promotional campaigns to instill 'FOMO' (Fear Of Missing Out) in ordinary traders. Catchy advertisements promising the "next 100x token" or a "chance to get rich quick," combined with aggressive promotion by paid influencers, are clear signs of a strategy designed to offload tokens onto the public at inflated prices.
In any secure decentralized project, liquidity is typically locked in an on-chain smart contract for an extended period or permanently. However, in scam projects, liquidity remains under the developers' control. The liquidity is left unlocked specifically to facilitate a 'Rug Pull'—allowing the organizers to instantly withdraw the funds contributed by ordinary traders. Failure to verify—using tools like TronScan or Etherscan—whether liquidity is locked before trading can lead to significant financial loss.
It is crucial to examine the project's on-chain wallet distribution before the scheme launches. If a vast majority (50% to 80%) of the total token supply is concentrated in just a few anonymous wallets, the project is highly risky. As soon as retail traders buy in, these key wallets dump millions of tokens onto the market, draining the funds.
Any legitimate project features a clear roadmap, a technical whitepaper, and an experienced team. In contrast, whitepapers for "pump-and-dump" projects are often plagiarized from other projects or lack substantive information. Furthermore, team members hide their identities behind anonymous profiles. Investing in a project that lacks genuine innovation or the backing of a well-organized community—such as "Amar Bangla Blog"—invites extreme risk. In short, the desire to become a millionaire overnight in the crypto market is the primary leverage for pump-and-dump scammers. Awareness, proper on-chain analysis, and making decisions based on technology rather than emotion are the only ways to protect oneself from such fraud. Today's discussion concludes here.
