Liver Is A Superfood! - How To Make Liver "Pills"
Liver is a great source of absorb-able iron. It's high in usable folate, it's the most concentrated source of vitamin B-12, it's an excellent source of trace minerals, and it's the BEST source of bio-available vitamin A!
Liver also contains all of the fat-soluble vitamins and consuming liver is a great way to increase your vitamin D intake.
So reading that short list, we can already see how nutritious liver is! It is essential that we consume animals that are local, pasture raised, and actually fed food that they're meant to eat (cattle should be eating a grass-fed diet, not corn and soy). Meat from pasture-raised animals has 2-4 times more omega-3 fatty acids than meat from commercially-raised animals, and grass-fed cattle have higher vitamin A content as well.
Someone may bring up that liver is full of toxins because the liver filters them. However, liver does NOT store toxins. Once the liver has identified the toxins, they are marked to be excreted via the intestines or kidneys. This also falls back onto the utmost importance to make sure that the meat your consuming is purely grass-fed and from a trusted source.
I urge everyone to do the research yourselves. Now, couple ideas about consuming liver if you have a tough time with it like I do...
One way you can consume liver is to hide it in your smoothies. Yup! Just add about a Tbsp frozen liver (either pre-chopped pieces, or just shave off bits with a sharp knife) to your smoothie! You shouldn't be able taste it unless you add more than you need, But a Tbsp should be enough.
Another way is you can grind it up with ground meat, for meatballs, meat patties, whatever the recipe that calls for ground beef. Great way to hide liver.
And one of my favorite methods that I learned from a close friend, frozen liver pills! Since the liver is frozen, you don't taste it when you take it.
It's a little work, but it's worth the nutrients.
First, take your liver.
Chop up into pill sized pieces, try to round them out so they don't freeze with pointy ends. Try not to make them too big either.
Then, you place in freezer, cover the top of the dish and let sit till they're frozen through. I recommend using a nonstick surface or spray. Use something that you'll be able to scrape the liver pills with and wont get scratched up. When frozen, take the pills, scrape them out, and place in a container you keep in the freezer and take as needed.
