Charar-e-Sharief is a hilly town in central Budgam district, about 30 km from Srinagar, the capital city of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Its high altitude offers wide, clear views of the surrounding landscape, adding greatly to its natural beauty. The town is also located on the way to Yousmarg, popularly known as the “Meadows of Jesus,” a picturesque place with lush green meadows and minimal human interference.
Charar-e-Sharief is about 30 km from the main airport in Budgam district, and it usually takes around one hour to reach the town from Srinagar.

Charar-e-Sharief is especially famous for the shrine of the revered Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (also known as Nund Rishi or Sheikh-ul-Aalam). He is regarded as one of the most respected Sufi saints of Kashmir. People from different religions and from across the country and world visit the shrine with deep faith, many believing that their wishes are fulfilled here. I am also a devotee and firmly believe in his closeness to the Almighty. The gathering of people from diverse backgrounds adds to the spiritual and cultural beauty of the place.

The shrine is located in the centre of the town, surrounded by houses spread across the hilly slopes. It is believed that Sheikh Noor-ud-Din travelled widely through the Kashmir Valley about 700 years ago. After his death, people from various regions wished to take his body to their own areas for burial. According to popular belief, when no decision could be made, the coffin miraculously moved on its own and came to rest at the present location. At that time there was no town here, but after his burial people began to settle around the shrine, and gradually Charar-e-Sharief grew into an important town with great historical and spiritual significance.

Because of its closeness to Yousmarg, many tourists who visit the meadows also stay in Charar-e-Sharief to visit the shrine and enjoy the town’s serene atmosphere. The shrine complex includes a large and beautiful mosque where a huge congregation gathers every Friday for prayers, creating an environment of peace and devotion.

The town has several guest houses, and many locals also offer homestays to visitors, often at very reasonable costs. The market near the shrine is known for its unique local foods and numerous bookshops. Many of these books contain the poetic works of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din, who expressed Islamic teachings and Quranic ideas in Kashmiri through his distinctive poetic style.

The shrine is a masterpiece of architecture, and the carvings done on the wood—especially on walnut wood—are truly fascinating. People feel amazed when they enter the shrine because of the minute, intricate work done by the craftsmen; it is an incredible sight to witness.
