Constructing A Water Channel

A water channel is a structure that provides a pathway for water to flow through it, its main function is to help drain out water and prevent flooding in the environment.

The nature of the water channel will now depend on its intended function and the volume of water it is expected to handle, which will determine the depth, width, and slope of the water channel.

Based on the specification, work started with the establishment of the zero level by the surveyor, markings and excavation.

We are about to transit to the wet season and at the moment, the ground is hard, calling for a digger and a strong shovel. Besides the effects of the dry season, this area has been compressed by heavy-duty trucks, loaded with topsoil, sand and stone base; materials used in the vicinity.

This place is and will continue to be a high-traffic area for incoming vehicles and supply trucks entering and exiting the facility. On this note, the structure of the drain must be strong enough to manage the load and constant use.
Another concern is the fact that the site is still very busy, once the drainage is constructed, it will not have much time to cake on its own as both small and heavy vehicles will have the need to pass over it. This means the drain will need a cover, more reasons why its dimensions must be precise.

The length of this water channel is 10 meters and the excavation was manually done by two workers, observing the direction of the slope.

Going with an elevation difference of 20 and a distance of 10 meters, a slope of 200% will get the water rushing away at high speed.

Slope = elevation difference/length

Difference in elevation = 40 - 20 = 20 units
Length of channel = 10m

The next task will be establishing the pegs, blinding the water channel, and establishing a reinforced base for the channel. It will be followed by a formwork for its sides.
