Get ready for a blast of visual effects! Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets review
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, is a fantasy movie about two private agents seeking to save the future of the universe from a threat that threatens to wipe out all beings.
The movie is directed by Luc Besson, who is known for his obsession with the visual aspect. Most of his previous films focus on the visual aspect more, such as Lucy and The Fifth Element, but he also presented one of the best crime and drama films Léon: The Professional. To come once again with a film that's visually maximized! The film was accepted with varying criticisms, most of them positive, but on the financial side it did not achieve any records compared to its huge budget, which reached about 177 million dollars, as it collected about 225 million dollars only, worldwide! So, is the movie worth it?
Visually, the film is like a painting full of color to its sides. Amazing, horrific and full of tons of fantasy creatures filling the screen in every aspect. I watched the movie on a medium-sized TV screen, and my eyes were sparkling as the stars twinkled with many visual effects, I am astonished to those who saw it in the IMAX cinema hall! The thing that made me remember the 2009 movie Avatar avatar looks a lot like it. It also reminds me somewhat of the Star Wars films directed by George Lucas, the latter of which is said to have inspired his films from the French comics Valérian and Laureline upon which this film is based. So, visually the movie feels like a hybrid between an Avatar and Star Wars movies.
Although most critics criticized the performance side of the two main characters, especially Major Valerian as they said it was kind of hollow! I might disagree with them here. The fact that the two main characters, Major Valerian and Sergeant Laureline, were a lot of fun. Yes, there were some moments when the actor Dane DeHaan in the character of Valerian was trying to embody the characteristics of the character "Han Solo" from the Star Wars films, especially the comic side. It looked like a clumsy clunker, but overall it still performed well. The second character, Laureline, from the performance of actress Cara Delevingne, who was the best in the movie, as she played the character appropriately, and most of the comedic moments were much better than Valerian.
Now we come to the bad side of the movie, there are two things that bothered me while I watch, the first is that the abundance of visual effects becomes sterile at times, yes the effects are very impressive from beginning to end, but almost the entire film uses effects and this may be considered a bad factor, the film is without effects It will be nothing, especially if we watch the scenes of his filming we will be completely shocked. We know that it is based on comic stories whose first basis is the visual aspect, but the visual effects were never the nucleus of the seventh art, it may be a catalyst, not the main factor.
Which leads us to the second downside in the film, which is, is there a decent story behind this wave of endless visual effects? The story is okay, nothing exceptional. Events in a universe of fiction, so prepare for worlds that do not hover near reality. The story, we might say, combines the Star Wars movies and the John Carter movie, which was released in 2012, but what you suffer from is that events slow down at times, which can make you feel bored.
Before we finish, I would like to point out two secondary characters who did not appear at length in the movie, the first from the performance of the singer "Rihanna" and the second from the performance of the wonderful actor "Ethan Hawke", which are considered among the best things I have seen in this entire movie. For a short period but they were dazzling, I wished they had been along the events of the movie, it would have been more interesting to watch.
