From an ancient cave in Iraq, the Baghdad Battery makes some people wonder. Could it be more than 2,000 years ago, the people of Iraq have known technology related to electricity?

The puzzle Baghdad Battery

Baghdad Battery or battery of Baghdad which is also sometimes referred to as the Parthian Battery, is the name given to a URN/Vase-shaped artifact that is estimated to date from the Parthian culture which flourished between 250 BC and 224 ad.

This URN is high 13 cm. Inside there is a hollow copper pipe and a piece of iron that is neatly arranged. One end of the iron transferring into the mouth of the jar with the asphalt while the other glued together end to the base of copper.

This urn was discovered in 1936 in an ancient tomb in Khujut, South of Baghdad. However, these artifacts were left just inside a dusty barn Museum of Baghdad up to two years.

In 1938, Germany Archaeologists named Konig Wilhelm who was then a Director of the Baghdad museum research laboratories discovered that jars in the barn museum and immediately noticed something odd.

Jar that has a copper pipe with a piece of metal in it. This design is not common for a jar. He did early research also found the presence of the former liquid acid such as vinegar or wine.

Konig realized if perhaps he had discovered an ancient Galvanic Cell that can be used to make batteries. If true, then this makes this a jug of Ooparts (Out of place Artefacts), because the new battery was discovered in 1800 by Alessandro Volta.

Konig became excited with the possibilities if the electrical technology might have known at the time of ancient Iraq. In 1940, although controversial, he published his theory about this artifact.

If this battery function?

After World War II ended, Willard Gray, an engineer at General Electric High Voltage Laboratory in Massachusets, who read the writings of Konig immediately made a replica of the Baghdad Battery. By entering the grape juice as an electrolyte, he managed to create electricity amounting to 0.5 volts.

This experiment makes the Baghdad Battery is famous all over the world.

Then the next question arises. Whether this simple URN is really a tool used by the ancient Iraq to produce electricity?

Is it true that they have known the principles of electricity?

If true, for if the tool is used?

Electroplating

In his publication about the Baghdad Battery, Konig mentions the possibility if this battery may be used as a tool to coat metal with gold or silver. This coating process called Electroplating, a technique that is still often used today.

To test this idea, in 1978, Dr. Arne Eggebrecht, Director of the Museum of the Roemer and Pelizaeus in Hildesheim made several replicas of the Baghdad Battery and Electroplating experiment. Later, he called managed to resurface an object with a silver lining as thick as 1/10,000 millimetres. Just as experiments Willard Gray, he used the grape juice as an electrolyte.

This experiment was quite horrendous. But it didn't take long for scientists to deny its validity.

The problem one. None of the other researchers could mimic the results of experiments Dr. Eggebrecht. Electricity generated by the Baghdad Battery is apparently not strong enough to be able to do the process of electroplating.

So, it is possible if the actual experiment has never been done. This was confirmed by Dr. Bettina Schmitz, a researcher at the same museum, who could not find any records about the existence of the experiment.

Not only that, the other problem related to this theory was never found objects or jewelry that they are coated using gold or silver electroplating of the Baghdad Battery.

Treatment Purposes

The nation of Greece and ancient Egypt ever recorded about the habits of the fish they use electricity to ease the pain on the sole of the foot. This shows that they are quite familiar with the flow of electricity, even though they don't use the term's "electric " to call it.

So, some researchers began to contemplate the possibility of the use of these artifacts as a tool to ease the pain.

But, just like the previous theory, there is sufficient reason to doubt this theory. Ancient records of ancient times was never broached regarding the use of similar tools Baghdad Battery in treatment. They used to use the leaves of Cannabis (Marijuana), wine and Opium to relieve pain.

The statue of the God who has the power

Then, in addition to the two theories are scientific enough above, there is a theory that touched the religious conspiracy.

Dr. Paul Craddock, a metallurgist from the British Museum's ancient, argued if the past few Baghdad Battery may have been connected in parallel and are put in the statues of gods to deceive the worship.

He said:

"Ministers will probably ask questions to you. If you give a wrong answer, you will be told to touch the image and will get a small electric shock. If you answer correctly, then the Ministers will release the battery connections and no electric shocks generated. Thus you will believe in the power of God, pastor and his religion. "

This theory, of course too wild to be taken as fact because none of the statues ever found with a cavity inside which can fill some of the Baghdad Battery.

So, what is the usefulness of this actual artifact? This URN is an electrical equipment?
