Top 500 Supercomputers - June 2017 - For the first time over two decades U.S. dropped out of Top 3!?

in #science8 years ago (edited)

A new list of supercomputer Top500, have just been released, and for the first time in two decades United States lost it's spot at Top3, with China taking both first and second spot ( Sunway TaihuLight,  Tianhe-2 (MilkyWay-2) ) And the third spot been taken by Switzerland ( Piz Daint )

Top 5

Although U.S. dropped out of top 3, they still secured their spot at 4 and 5 place.

This years, Sunway TaihuLight have hold their spot as first place for the second year, it is capable of performing 93 quadrillion calculations per second, that is almost 3x faster then the second place Tianhe-2 (MilkyWay-2), and followed up by  Piz Daint which is a supercomputer developed by Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.

The reason  Piz Daint rises from 8th place into the Top3 this year is because they upgraded their system with the latest Nvidia GPUs ( Nvidia Tesla P100)
