Classical biochemistry! What do you learn in med school these days: Is mitochondria still an internalised 'bacteria'?
I believe mitochondria are still thought of as originally being prokaryotes that were internalised by higher cellular organisms. With the evidence of this being that mitochondria possess their own DNA, which is separate from the DNA contain within the nucleus of eukaryotic organisms.
