Going Up the Down Escalator
Just because no one asked, I’m going to share another of Mind’s metaphors for Life.
The path of life is like walking up the down escalator. Surely you have had this experience in younger days. Sometimes it’s a challenge and other times it’s just fun. You see this in movies all the time. In fact, to digress, one of cinema’s longest-running icons, is the car chase. In every car chase, as if we haven’t seen this a thousands times, a vehicle is going the wrong way in traffic. The concept is over a hundred years old, although it has matured over the years. The modern wrong-way car chase scene seems to have come of age in 1985.
From the “Life is like,” file.
Life is like walking up the down escalator. In youth, the stairs move slowly and we are strong, agile, and take our conditioning and fitness for granted. I’m talking back in the day, and maybe for a lot of kids today. But there are some youngins out here these days that couldn’t make it up an escalator even if the steps weren’t moving.
Every year, the escalator moves a little bit faster. And every year, the vessel becomes a little bit heavier, slower, maybe a bit more fatigued, and in many cases it is carrying more baggage. Emotional or otherwise. This is my image and within the simulation, it’s our goal to maintain our pace on this escalator. Because, reaching bottom is death. Death is always there at the bottom of the escalator and those steps are trying to take you there. No one gets off this thing alive.
Of course, this is just an image. However, this hyper-active Mind is always attempting to extend the metaphor until it’s more, real-life, than metaphor. There are countless factors that can weigh the traveler down. We’ll call it all, “weight.” Body weight. The weight of grief. Unfulfilled expectations. Environmental attacks. Geopolitical sense of doom. Malaise. All of this stuff literally feels like weight and it slows ascension.
Here’s one of many areas where the metaphor veers away from what might, “make sense.” This is not the stairway to heaven. It’s perpetual motion. It’s life. Vitality. Survival. When parts stop moving, it’s not so much, “death coming,” but life-force energy leaving. The escalator doesn’t stop when you stop. It just carries you straight to the bottom.
No tears. No negotiations. No reprieves. And, those stairs are moving faster annually. Indeed, daily.
This picture doesn’t scare me. It motivates me. It’s as if We’ve been issued a challenge, maybe an opportunity, and along the way we’ve been gifted a series of clues which help extend the journey. Most of them have to to with weight.
I think that’s pretty much it. Feel free to drop a question or two if you’d like clarification.
