A new conflict has surfaced in Bangladesh when a person with anti-India opinion Sharif Osman Hadi got a grave next to the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in death. This decision has brought criticism from all directions, including political leaders, activists from different fields, and student groups, who are arguing that the resting place of national icons should remain undisturbed by political rows.

Kazi Nazrul Islam is considered a unifying, resistant, and cultural pride symbol by a vast majority in Bangladesh. His mausoleum is a culturally sacred site, drawing to its precincts a great number of scholars, students, and general admirers from all over the country. The interment of a conflicting political personality close to his tomb has not only raised questions about the treatment of national heritage but also about the absence of clear regulations regarding burials in such places.

Sharif Osman Hadi, who died not long ago, was a controversial figure because of his candid political activism and his speech that usually got criticized for being polarizing. The supporters see him as a sincere nationalist, while the detractors consider him a fundamentalist whose thinking is far from the tolerant heritage linked with Nazrul Islam.

University students in Dhaka and civil society people have been protesting for the revelation of the process behind the granting of the burial permission. The opposition parties have also raised their doubts about the authorities' actions and demanded a revision of the burial policies at places of historic importance.

The local authorities have defended themselves by saying that the burial was conducted according to the proper procedure, yet they have not given any in-depth description of the factors determining the standard. The furious crowd has not accepted this answer and lots of people are demanding tougher regulations.

This incident has re-iterated the issue of how to handle cultural heritage in Bangladesh considering the political climate. Still, there are those who indicate that the controversy may lead the government to review its national heritage site policies and thus, conflicts may become rarer in the future.
