Spanish for English Speakers: Episode 1 - Greetings and Goodbyes
¡Hola amigos de Steemit!
Before we start ...
It's a good idea to learn the Spanish alphabet and phonetics before studying further, as this will allow you to practice speaking and to recognise the sounds of the words we are about to look at. Click here for a fantastic video on this (I do not own any rights to this video).
Let's learn how to say greetings and goodbyes in Spanish!
Greetings:
Hola. - Hi/Hello.
¿Qué tal? - What's up? (Remember: in Spanish, a second exclamation mark/question mark is used upside down at the beginning of the phrase/question.)
Buenos días. - Good morning.
Buenas tardes. - Good afternoon.
Buenas noches. - Good evening/night. (This can be a greeting or a goodbye.)
Tanto tiempo sin verte. - Long time no see!
¿Cómo estás? - How are you?
¿Cómo está usted? - How are you? (Formal)
¿Qué pasa? - What's up?
¿Qué hay de nuevo? - What's new?
Phew, that's a lot of greetings! Now for some goodbyes ...
Adiós. - Bye.
Hasta luego. - See you later.
Con permiso ... - If you'll excuse me ... (For getting out of a boring conversation with abuela politely!)
Ya me voy. - Gotta go.
Nos vemos. - See you later.
Cuídate. - Take care.
Cuídese. - Take care. (Formal)
Que te vaya bien. - I wish you well.
There, all the greetings and goodbyes you could ever need and then some! I hope you enjoyed this episode and found it useful. Thanks for your support! ¡Hasta luego!
