World No.1 Ashleigh Barty is now in danger of losing her place after American Sofia Kennin defeated her in the second round of the Rogers Cup.
Barty's power has no effect against Kennin, 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 56 minutes.
Barty is expected to replace world No. 2 Naomi Osaka after winning this match on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Japanese opened his tournament campaign against Germany's Tatjana Maria.
Meanwhile, No. 7 seed Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams also fail.
Stephens humiliated Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 7-5; while seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams lost 6-4, 6-2 to Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
Also move in the second round were Donna Vekic, Alison Riske, Katerina Siniakova, Zhang Shuai, Iga Swiatek and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
