Pogba Misses Penalty As Manchester United Draw At Wolves
Manchester United played a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night at the Molineux Stadium. After dominating much of the first half, Anthony Martial fired them into the lead in the 27th minute. Wolves however came roaring back in the second half and got the equalizer through a goal from Ruben Neves. Paul Pogba missed a chance to put United back in front with Rui Patricio saving his kick from the penalty spot. This leaves United manager, Solskjaer, winless in three matches against Wolves since he took over in December.
Speaking after the game, their manager insisted Pogba will still be a penalty taker for the team.
“The two of them are the designated penalty shooters, and it’s up to them, there and then, who feels that it is theirs,” the manager said. “Sometimes, players just feel that they’re confident enough to score. Paul’s scored so many penalties for us, and today Patricio made a good save.
“There is a system, you can see the slides on the PowerPoint. That doesn’t change after tonight, the two of them have been very confident before and last week, Marcus scored a goal. I’m sure [Rashford] would have loved to, but Paul is also confident and plays with confidence and has the feeling of ‘I can do this’.”
On his thoughts on their overall performance, Ole felt United controlled the game and could have won it.
“We dominated possession,” Solskjaer added. “We got the first goal, which is a great goal, then second half we know they’re going to come out like a house on fire. They gamble a little bit, create a couple of chances and probably got the goal they deserve for the pressure they had. Then I thought we took control again and could’ve won it.
"It was a mature performance. Second half, a little bit sloppier but we are improving. We are a very young team that will learn and today we learned on the pitch as well, you have to learn on the job. You can’t just sit back and discuss after. They had to get the mentality right after we’ve conceded that goal because that goal was coming. I thought we finished the game the strongest.”
Manchester United host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford next and will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
