Are We Protecting Our Children or Our Fears?

Hi guys, accept warm Steem greetings from the motherland of Cameroon, and welcome to my blog as I share another interesting write-up about mothers' perceptions of kids playing soccer in rural communities in Cameroon.

In many rural communities across Cameroon, it is common to hear mothers discourage their children from playing football. Some believe football will make a child stubborn, disrespectful, or eventually lead them to drop out of school. Others go to great lengths to prevent their children from attending training sessions or joining local teams.

But an important question often comes to mind whenever I’m doing fieldwork in these communities. Are we truly protecting our children, or are we protecting our own fears?

Football is more than just a game to me because it teaches discipline, teamwork, resilience, leadership, and goal-setting. For many young people, it provides a sense of purpose, confidence, and an opportunity to dream beyond the boundaries of their villages.

Of course, education remains essential but my mind is still crowded with questions as I continue to ponder “…must football and education be enemies? Why can't a child excel in both?

History has shown us that talent can open doors. Some children may never become professional footballers, but the lessons they learn on the pitch can help them succeed in life. Denying them the chance to explore their passion may mean denying them the opportunity to discover their potential.

Parents play a vital role in guiding their children and the guidance is as important as support. Nonetheless fear should not be the reason a child's dream is buried before it even begins.

Let's encourage balance and support our children to study, let children play, as every dream deserves a chance.
